Here are some Do's and Don'ts that can help you avoid phone scams and frauds:
- DO ask for further documentation from the caller (long distance representative) so you can verify the validity of the long distance company.
- DO NOT be fooled by the promise of a great prize in signing up or switching to a long distance carrier.
- DO NOT be pressured to send money to take advantage of a "special offer or deal."
- DO NOT be hurried into sending money to claim a prize that is a limited offer.
- DO NOT give any information about your finances, bank accounts, social security number or credit cards even the credit card expiry date.
- DO NOT be afraid to hang-up the phone.
- DO contact proper authorities if you are contacted by someone who promises you great prizes, but you are required to send money in advance for shipping, handling, taxes, etc.
- DO contact proper authorities if you are contacted by someone who says that you have won a prize, but you have to purchase or switch to a long distance company to qualify
