How does it work?
If you have not changed your default password on your voice mailbox, hackers can access the consumer's or business's voice mail system and make collect calls without the knowledge or permission of the consumer.
A hacker calls into a voice mail system and searches for voice mailboxes that still have the default passwords active or have passwords with easily-guessed combinations, like 1-2-3-4. They use the password and access the phone system letting them make international calls and you will end up paying for it.
Prevent voice mail fraud:
- Always change the default password of your voice mail.
- Change your voice mail password once in a while.
- Consider blocking international calls.
- You should consider disabling voice mail features that are not used.
- Talk to your voice mail provider for additional precautions to ensure the security of their voice mail system.
